Helping Your Child Manage Big Worries with a “Worry Wand”
As a parent, seeing your child struggle with big worries and anxiety can be heart-wrenching. Whether it’s separation anxiety, fear of the unknown, or just the overwhelming emotions that come with growing up, you want nothing more than to help them feel safe and secure.
If you’ve been searching for a simple, yet effective way to support your child through their anxious moments, I’ve got just the thing for you—a “Worry Wand.” This easy, hands-on tool not only engages your child but also empowers them to take control of their worries in a fun and creative way.
What Is a Worry Wand?
A worry wand is a DIY tool that helps kids channel their anxiety into a calming activity. It’s made with just a few simple materials: a pipe cleaner and beads. The process of making and using the wand allows your child to focus on their breathing and transform their worries into something manageable.
How to Make a Worry Wand:
1. Gather Your Supplies: You’ll need a pipe cleaner and five beads.
2. Create a Heart: Take the pipe cleaner and bend it into a heart shape at the top. This heart is where your child will focus all their positive energy.
3. Add the Beads: Slide five beads onto the pipe cleaner. These beads represent the worries your child is feeling.
4. Secure the Beads: Make a small circle at the bottom of the pipe cleaner to keep the beads from falling off.
5. Teach the Breathing Technique: Show your child how to take a deep breath in while sliding a bead to the heart. Then, have them blow out and imagine filling the heart with “worry magic.” Repeat this five times until the wand is filled.

Why It Works
The worry wand combines deep breathing with a physical activity, which can be incredibly soothing for children. The process of moving the beads and focusing on their breath helps them release some of their anxiety and feel more in control. Plus, the heart at the top of the wand gives them a visual reminder that their worries are now being held in a safe place.
